Oweninny Wind Farm

RECEIVING ENVIRONMENT
Field inspection of the wind farm location

Project overview

IAC were contracted to prepare an archaeological, architectural & cultural heritage chapter of an EIA for a wind farm at Bord Na Mona Oweninny Bog in Co. Mayo. These works included a full baseline assessment, detailed field inspections, and the archaeological monitoring of 83 trail pits. One of the trial pits investigated by our team produced some material of archaeological significance, a single piece of worked wood. The worked end was found just below the surface of the peat in an area that had never been in production, on the northeast edge of the marshy lake. It is possible that the piece of worked wood may represent an isolated stray find but may be part of a larger structure located on a slightly raised portion of the bog.
